08 Aug How to Clean Blinds and Shutters

Taking care of your blinds and shutters is easy and should be done regularly to improve the life and appearance of your investment.

General Care and Cleaning Helpful Hints

  • Dusting: Even just light dusting on a regular basis can keep your blinds and shutters looking brand new.
  • Vacuuming: For a more thorough cleaning, you can lightly use the vacuum cleaner while utilizing the brush attachment.

Faux Wood Blinds and Composite Shutters

  • For faux wood, the safest way to clean is to regularly use a clean and dry feather type duster, a cleaning cloth or the brush attachment to your vacuum.
  • For best results, open the shutter louvers or blind planks so that both sides can be cleaned. Next, tilt the louvers or planks upward until closed and continue to dust. Then repeat the process with the louvers or slats tilted downward.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners or chemical solvents, as they will scratch or damage the surface.

Wood Blinds and Shutters

  • Like faux wood, the best way to clean real wood is to regularly use a clean and dry feather type duster, a cleaning cloth or the brush attachment to your vacuum.
  • The use of ultrasonic cleaning, chemical solvents and scrubbing cleansers will damage the wood.
  • Take care to protect all fine wood blinds and shutters from exposure to steam or moisture, taking care to keep windows closed during rain and or when the lawn sprinklers are on.
  • For best results, open the shutter louvers or blind planks so that both sides can be cleaned. Next, tilt the louvers or planks upward until closed and continue to dust. Then repeat the process with the louvers or slats tilted downward.
  • Treat your wood blinds and shutters like any fine wood furniture. They should be treated periodically with lemon oil or any other high quality wood preservative to protect and preserve.
  • When cleaning your windows, spray the glass cleaner on a cloth rather than directly on the window to prevent damage to the wood from any extra splatter.

With regular and appropriate care, your blinds and shutters will last you for years to come!

blackout draperies - blackout curtains

28 Jul Blackout Curtains

Here’s some interesting History: Blackout curtains were used in Europe during the Second World War to hide interior light from Nazi planes. Any light seen from the sky would be a target for a bomb. That war is long over, but people have found many other uses for these curtains since then.

There are three main functions of blackout curtains. They block light, they block excess noise and they reduce your energy costs.

1. Block Light

People who work at night regularly suffer from health problems from having disrupted sleep patterns. Blackout curtains can create a night time setting and help you get a good, solid sleep. Also, more and more homes are adding “theater rooms” and blackout curtains can give the effect of a dark movie theater so that you can enjoy your show right under your own roof.

2. Block Noise

Some blackout curtains can block up to 40% of noise. This can also come in handy for those night time workers who are trying to get good sleep during the day. Parents of babies and young children also enjoy this feature during nap time.

3. Save Energy

Blackout curtains can trap heat in during the winter and cool air during the summer. The fact is that 10-25% of thermal energy loss goes right out the window, so to speak.  These curtains can reduce this loss by a 25%.

Royal Window Fashions has a wide variety of choices to help you plan for that home theater of your dreams or to help you cut down on unwanted light, noise, and high energy costs. We provide free consultations with experienced professionals. Contact us and get started today!

25 Jun Choosing Nursery Shades

If you’ve had a baby, you already know and if you haven’t had one yet, you are soon to find out: Babies need dark rooms for those precious naps. (note: these naps are just as precious to the parents as they are to the baby).
Avoid Floor-Length draperies. While they may look dreamy and charming, they are a safety hazard to your bundle of joy. If your toddler can get their hands on the drapes, chances are they can pull them down, climb up them or even get tangled in any existing cords. It’s best to keep such things out of reach.

Don’t let your treatments outshine your window. Window treatments usually cover a large portion of the glass in a window, even when pulled back. If you choose curtains, get ones that have wide-panels and install them far away from the windows edge. Please make sure that the rod can be stretched safely to the length you desire. Rods that are stretched too thinly can dip and break in the middle and could injure your child.

Cellular Shades are an excellent choice. Cellular shades are perfect for your baby’s room. They are available in room darkening fabrics and can be cordless or motorized so that there are no cords to endanger your bundle of joy.

Consider a Valance. A fabric valance can soften the look of blinds by adding texture and color while they stay up high away from little hands. If you want a more polished look, you could use a cornice box, a simple wood frame above the window that can be padded and covered with fabric and trim.

Think about Roller Shades. Like blinds, roller shades can be customized and can also be automatic with a remote control. Imagine being able to gently wake your baby by remotely opening the shades.

Introduce a pattern and enhance your theme. Add a fun touch to your nursery design with the window treatments. If you choose a pattern that is different but complementary, try using it more than once, possibly in a seat cushion or pillow cover.

No beads! While beading and fringe is very popular right now, they are also choking hazards. Stay away from such décor. A safer bet, and also a quite popular one, is embroidery.

Childproof your blinds. Blinds usually come with long cords that can cause a strangulation hazard for small children. Make sure all cords are out of reach or are covered with a safety device.

Make sure all treatments are properly installed. Don’t cut corners. Keep your kiddos safe by having a professional install and make recommendations.

Wishing you all beautiful nurseries and restful nights!

29 May Benefits of Motorized Window Treatments

Motorized Window Treatments are not only convenient, but are customized for your needs and allow for added safety in your home.

Opening and closing multiple window shades in your home, and especially in your place of business takes time and brings wear and tear to the shades or draperies themselves. The convenience of motorization saves time and gives a polished look.

Showcase those beautiful high Windows

Motorized window coverings are at last the answer to those beautiful but high windows in your home or office. The ones that don’t have shades currently because there’s just no way to access those windows. Now you can call attention to their beauty with a push of a button.

Easy to Use

Accessibility is key when you are elderly or unable to get around at a comfortable pace. The power of motorization is giving control of their home privacy, beauty and safety to those who could otherwise not gain access to their windows easily.

Great Home Security

No one wants to keep their window shaded closed permanently as it could signal to a burglar that no one is at home. Motorized shades can be put on a timer, much like the ones many people use for their lamps. This deters unwanted attention to your home while you are away.

Indoor Safety

Motorized window coverings mean there are no stray cords that could hurt your children, grandchildren or pets. More safety always means less worry.

There are so many benefits with motorization. Give Royal Window Fashions a call so that we can show you just how easy and affordable these products are. We are here to help you!

Simplify.  Integrate.  Save.
